DukeEngage: Creating Life-Long Difference Makers

17 Sep

In my continuing research of college service programs, I learned that Duke University has one of the most developed service programs along with one of the most passionate and dedicated student bodies to participate in those service programs. One of their service programs, DukeEngage, stands out as an incredible opportunity for Duke students and one that empowers students to leave an impact in communities in the U.S. and abroad.

DukeEngage provides funding for Duke undergraduates who wish to pursue an immersive experience participating in civic engagement activities including environmental advocacy, community outreach, global health, education, social justice. Since the program began, more than 2,000 Duke students have participated in more than 70 nations around the world. They have served over 500 community organizations on six continents.

Students can choose to participate in a domestic or international program in countries such as Guatamala and Tanzania. They also have the option to develop their own DukeEngage experience.

Examples of programs and projects since 2007:

• launched mentoring and school enrichment programs;

• created community support initiatives;

• designed health education and outreach programs

• improved a community’s health information infrastructure;

• produced environmental education documentaries;

• developed microfinance opportunities for disadvantaged women and families

In addition to the many other service organizations on campus, Duke Engage is an example of the meaningful and impactful service in which college students can take part. It is an opportunity for students to expand their horizons and dive deep into becoming difference makers, one community at a time. This immersive service opportunity is unlike any other at a University, and one which allows students to be a part of something bigger than themselves.
